At Okashi Tsukuru in Kyoto's Kamigyo Ward, a counter of just 6 seats sets the stage for multi-course seasonal parfaits, freshly prepared French toast, and a morning menu of doughnuts and hotcakes.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping into the space, which retains the understated character of a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse, guests are greeted by an intimate counter of just 6 seats encircling the open kitchen. At Okashi Tsukuru in Kamigyo Ward, diners can take their time with composed sweets while watching each element assembled right before them.
During afternoon dessert hours, sweets are presented in the style of a structured tasting course, progressing from an opening bite to the central dessert and a thoughtful finish. Seasonal fruit parfaits and richly toasted French toast highlight inventive flavour pairings alongside balanced sweetness and texture. After finishing the main sweet dish, guests are treated to a savoury palate cleanser, such as freshly fried potato crisps, bringing the experience to a satisfying close.
The morning café service offers a different rhythm, featuring springy, pan-baked hotcakes and the kitchen's signature doughnuts lightly scented with cinnamon. Savoury appetites are also catered to with items like Maribo cheese toasted sandwiches and open-faced toasts. Drink selections range from clean drip coffee to richer warm options, including a ginger milk spiced with a distinct kick of fresh ginger.
With only 6 seats, the quiet room lends itself well to solo visitors looking to savour a quiet bite. Note that payment is cash only, so it is best to carry yen notes or coins before heading in.
